Cozumel raccoon toymakers.
Nessie O’Neil, a biologist and graduate student with Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, discovered a pair of critically endangered pygmy raccoons making toys from trash. Watch. On a research expedition in Cozumel, Mexico, she observed one raccoon retrieving paper from a trash bin, soaking it in her water bowl and rolling it into toy balls. Reader Dana pointed out this foul news: The Indian Runner ducks originally bred 2,000+ years ago in Indonesia to control rice paddy pests are the new vineyard “pesticide” — without all those nasty, chemical, soil-ruining aftereffects. It’s a win-win-win: the ducks eat their fill of bugs to keep the growing grapes unblemished. Then the ducks “contribute” soil enrichment.
